Africa's Emerging Securities Markets $38.1 The increasing globalization of financial markets has resulted in a substantial increase in net private capital flows to developing countries, primarily the emerging economies of Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. Until recently, investors have ignored opportunities in Africa. African markets caught investors' attention in 1994 with Kenya's 179% U.S. dollar returns leading world equity markets, along with six of the world's top ten markets being in Africa. With low levels of correlation between African and developed world markets, the African exchanges represent ideal portfolio diversification opportunities. Moreover, rates of return for African investments are among the highest returns in the world, yet African nations have not attracted the foreign direct investment that is required to change their economies. Dr. Clark's research examines the nature and evolution of Africa's emerging securities markets and their role in regional economic development. He shows that the continent's trading systems represent many different trading arrangements without standardized rules and procedures. African countries continue to implement reforms to strengthen the development of financial markets, but without the appropriate market microstructure and custodial arrangements international investors will not provide African projects with the equity capital required for further development. The government's role in the regulation of developing equity markets, therefore, is a critical element to the success of the reform process. Clark argues that freeing the economies to international competition will reap significant dividends for the continent's emerging economies. As the markets evolve, structural impediments will reduce, leading to increased efficiencies and lower capital costs. |

African Historical Archaeologies $189 Traditionally, Historical Archaeology has had a North American or European stance, focusing on the interplay between historical documents and the archaeological record. For Africa, with its non-traditional historical sources, this interplay is not as applicable. These sources also inform the period of contact with Europeans, during which the shape of the modern continent was inexorably defined. By focusing on such sources, it becomes possible to present historical understandings which access African experiences with outsiders and other African populations. This volume explores the range of interactions between the historical sources and archaeology that are available on the African continent. The contributions, written by a range of experts on different aspects of African archaeology, present the underlying issues such as: The conflict and collaboration in the foundation of modern Africa; African trading communities maintaining their independence from Europe; The impacts of the Atlantic slave trade. #/LIST# This represents the first consideration of historical archaeology over the African continent as a whole and therefore provides an important review for African archaeologists and historians. This seminal volume also explores Africa's place in global systems of thought and economic development for historical archaeologists and historians alike. |

Biologically Inspired Algorithms for Financial Modelling $119 Predicting the future for financial gain is a difficult, sometimes profitable activity. The focus of this book is the application of biologically inspired algorithms (BIAs) to financial modelling. In a detailed introduction, the authors explain computer trading on financial markets and the difficulties faced in financial market modelling. Then Part I provides a thorough guide to the various bioinspired methodologies neural networks, evolutionary computing (particularly genetic algorithms and grammatical evolution), particle swarm and ant colony optimization, and immune systems. Part II brings the reader through the development of market trading systems. Finally, Part III examines real-world case studies where BIA methodologies are employed to construct trading systems in equity and foreign exchange markets, and for the prediction of corporate bond ratings and corporate failures. The book was written for those in the finance community who want to apply BIAs in financial modelling, and for computer scientists who want an introduction to this growing application domain. |

Brand New Justice $35.83 Recently vilified as the prime dynamic driving home the breach between poor and rich nations, here the branding process is rehabilitated as a potential saviour of the economically underprivileged. Brand New Justice, now in a revised paperback edition, systematically analyses the success stories of the Top Thirteen nations, demonstrating that their wealth is based on the 'last mile' of the commercial process: buying raw materials and manufacturing cheaply in third world countries, these countries realise their lucrative profits by adding value through finishing, packaging and marketing and then selling the branded product on to the end-user at a hugely inflated price. The use of sophisticated global media techniques alongside a range of creative marketing activities are the lynchpins of this process. Applying his observations on economic history and the development and impact of global marketing, Anholt presents a cogent plan for developing nations to benefit from globalization. So long the helpless victim of capitalist trading systems, he shows that they can cross the divide and graduate from supplier nation to producer nation. Branding native produce on a global scale, making a commercial virtue out of perceived authenticity and otherness and fully capitalising on the 'last mile' benefits are key to this graduation and fundamental to forging a new global economic balance. Anholt argues with a forceful logic, but also backs his hypothesis with enticing glimpses of this process actually beginning to take place. Examining activities in India, Thailand, Russia and Africa among others, he shows the risks, challenges and pressures inherent in 'turning the tide', but above all hedemonstrates the very real possibility of enlightened capitalism working as a force for good in global terms. * Controversial and thought-provoking analysis of issues that are central to 21st century economic thought; radical new thinking on wealth-creation in the developing world. |

Building Automated Trading Systems $90.95 Over the next few years, the proprietary trading and hedge fund industries will migrate largely to automated trade selection and execution systems. Indeed, this is already happening. While several finance books provide C++ code for pricing derivatives and performing numerical calculations, none approaches the topic from a system design perspective. This book will be divided into two sections???programming techniques and automated trading system ( ATS ) technology???and teach financial system design and development from the absolute ground up using Microsoft Visual C++.NET 2005. MS Visual C++.NET 2005 has been chosen as the implementation language primarily because most trading firms and large banks have developed and continue to develop their proprietary algorithms in ISO C++ and Visual C++.NET provides the greatest flexibility for incorporating these legacy algorithms into working systems. Furthermore, the .NET Framework and development environment provide the best libraries and tools for rapid development of trading systems. The first section of the book explains Visual C++.NET 2005 in detail and focuses on the required programming knowledge for automated trading system development, including object oriented design, delegates and events, enumerations, random number generation, timing and timer objects, and data management with STL.NET and .NET collections. Furthermore, since most legacy code and modeling code in the financial markets is done in ISO C++, this book looks in depth at several advanced topics relating to managed/unmanaged/COM memory management and interoperability. Further, this book provides dozens of examples illustrating the use of database connectivity with ADO.NETand an extensive treatment of SQL and FIX and XML/FIXML. Advanced programming topics such as threading, sockets, as well as using C++.NET to connect to Excel are also discussed at length and supported by examples. The second section of the book explains technological concerns and de |

Comparative Law Yearbook of International Business: Volume 27 $117.3 This year's volume of the Comparative Law Yearbook of International Business covers a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from the historical development of civil law in China, with its German and Russian influences, to legal regulation of the new technologies involved in electronic commerce. The use of electronic contracts and signatures is becoming more and more widespread, and international law has addressed these issues in the Model Law on Electronic Commerce and the Model law on Electronic Signatures. The book contains chapters describing the way in which Brazil and Japan have incorporated these laws into their national legal systems and what measure they have to regulate the use of these new technologies in the conducting of business transactions. Another area that is dealt with here is that of insider trading and market abuse, particularly in relation to the Netherlands and Finland. Following a number of cases highlighting the problem, the European Union has introduced the Market Abuse Directive and the Insider Trading Directive which, again, are being implemented by the Member States. European employment law is also under discussion, with particular regard being had to the protection of employees' rights upon the transfer of undertakings. This is looked at from both the European and French points of view, with the general employment law situation in Estonia being discussed in detail. Once again, the new law regulating investment is raised in this volume, this time dealing with private investment in Peru and foreign investment in the Russian Federation. In addition, a number of general commercial issues are included, such as European insolvency law, damage caps in American tort law, arbitration as a dispute resolution mechanism in mergers and acquisitions, security interest over property in Spain and the doctrine of legitimate expectation in Australian immigration law, as well as a comparative study of Japanese and Iranian trademark law. All of these topics are |

Decolonizing the Colonial City $190.22 In this sequel to Kingston, Jamaica: Urban Development and Social Change, 1692 to 1962 (1975) Colin Clarke investigates the role of class, colour, race, and culture in the changing social stratification and spatial patterning of Kingston, Jamaica since independence in 1962. He also assessesthe strains - created by the doubling of the population - on labour and housing markets, which are themselves important ingredients in urban social stratification. Special attention is also given to colour, class, and race segregation, to the formation of the Kingston ghetto, to the role ofpolitics in the creation of zones of violence and drug trading in downtown Kingston, and to the contribution of the arts to the evolution of national culture. A special feature is the inclusion of multiple maps produced and compiled using GIS (geographical information systems). The book concludeswith a comparison with the post-colonial urban problems of South Africa and Brazil, and an evalution of the de-colonization of Kingston. |

European Land Law $98.89 In his remarkable, ground-breaking new book, Peter Sparkes takes stock of the development of a distinctive body of European land law, taking as his starting point the idea that methods of land-holding permitted by a legal system both shape and reflect the attitudes of the land owners and society in general. However, it quickly becomes very difficult to test that idea when the society in question is governed by an internal market composed of 30 countries within the European Union/European Economic Area whose property systems differ so markedly and which reflect such widely differing cultures. The author writes in his preface, We all become better off by joining a larger trading block but the social consequences will be profound: Brits will need to emigrate to the continent to afford a home, Bulgarians will need to make way for them along the Black Sea coast, and title deeds will be reshuffled all over Europe on a giant Monopoly board. The opening chapters are devoted to an explana |

Institutional Investors $48.12 One of the most important recent developments in financial markets is the institutionalization of saving associated with the growth of pension funds, life insurance companies, and mutual funds. An increasing proportion of household saving is now managed by professional portfolio managers instead of being directly invested in the securities markets or held in the form of bank deposits. With the aging of the population and its adverse impact on public pension systems, the shift of individual savings to institutional investors is likely to become even more marked in the coming years. This book provides a comprehensive economic assessment of institutional investment. It charts the development and performance of the asset management industry and analyzes the implications of rising institutionalized saving for the development of the securities trading industry, the financial sector as a whole, and the wider economy. The book draws extensively on international experience, particularly in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan. |

Palaeobyzantine Notations III $123.57 This publication, the result of a conference attended by musicologists and By zaninists at Hernen Castle / NI, illuminates different aspects of Byzantine and ensuing Slavic chant. It focuses on two major topics; notation and melismatics; other contributions explore Byzantine and Slavic trading through liturgy, the modality of the chants and oral transmission. It is important to view the musical and liturgics appearance of late Byzanine and Slavic times not as separate from early tradition, but to always keep its roots of development in mind. Thus, the emergence of the different notation systems forms the basis for all further research. In the liturgical music of the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, melismatic chants developed as early as the 8th--10th century, while simple meodies prevaled in monasticrites. The fusion of cathedral and monastic tradition constituted the foundation for the emergence of a highly melismatic chant form, the kalophony. Based on the Byzantine chant tradition, melismatic chants, which influenced the ornamented melodies of Russian church music of the 15th-17th centuries, were already in use in Slavic areas in the 11th century. Another important aspect is the significance of oral transmission, which constituted a main element of the tradition of chants through time. |

Store Location and Assessment Research $1000 Store Location and Store Assessment Research Edited by R. L. Davies University of Newcastle, UK and D. S. Rogers D. S. R. Marketing Systems Inc., Illinois, USA An invaluable book to students and practitioners in marketing and retailing. This book looks at store location and store assessment research on both sides of the Atlantic from an academic and a practical retailing point of view, and in doing so attempts to fill a gap in an area which has been hitherto poorly documented. It is also an area in which theory and practice have rarely interrelated. This book endeavours to marry the academic contributions that have been made from a largely theoretical perspective to a series of business experiences that have been conducted in practice. In an age of relative store saturation and an abundance of shopping centres accurate store location research and store location assessment is not only advisable but essential. In recent years a coalescence of needs and a sharing of ideas has transpired between the USA and the UK and has provided a rationale for this collection of Anglo-American essays which give a balanced view of the theory and the practice that make up the subject. Strategic Sourcing of Information Systems: Perspectives and Practices $107.95 Increasingly large multinationals and public sector agencies, as well as small and medium organizations, have perceived value in transferring some or most of their IT assets, leases and staff to third party vendors. This trend has been maintained by high-profile mega-deals based ostensibly on the logic of core competence thinking and trends towards alliance capitalism. However, many members of the IT community have signalled the dangers inherent in relinquishing management control of a strategic asset. In some cases these warnings have proved valid, with several strategic partnerships experiencing severe problems. Conversely, some of the companies adamantly refusing to countenance outsourcing have struggled to demonstrate IT value. The key question therefore is not should IT be outsourced, but where and how can business leverage be achieved through utilising the rapidly developing market for IT services. Strategic Sourcing of Information Systems answers this question by-providing a forum of current thinking by prominent scholars and practitioners from around the globe. Edited and with a lengthy Introduction by Leslie Willcocks and Mary Lacity, two internationally recognised experts in this field, the books coverage includes: Selective Outsourcing Total Outsourcing Total Insourcing IT department as a trading agency Offshore Development This book has been designed for both academics and practitioners. Theoretical perspectives allow critical variables to be extracted in order to explain successful or unsuccessful decisions, while decision frameworks and case studies provide guidelines on which sourcing options to select, and how to manage outsourcing arrangements. |
